Skateboard Deck

A skateboard deck is the most important and visible piece of a complete skateboard set up. It is typically made from thin layers of maple wood tightly pressed and glued together to produce a board that is just as stronger than a solid piece and also can flex and bend without cracking or breaking, a very important attribute. Other materials, such as bamboo, other hardwoods and even combinations of plastics and fiberglass can also be used.

The shape of skateboard decks have evolved over time from the first boards which were designed as miniature versions of their surfboards and often called banana boards and sidewalk surfers. They got larger until the mid eighties when they began taking the form that they are in today which has turned up tails and a slight bow in the middle. The plastic bumpers of the eighties thankfully died out with the cold war.

Another type of skateboard deck is the longboard which can be anywhere from the size of a regular short board up to six feet long. They are often pressed with more layers of wood for added strength which is necessary due to their longer length and they also come in many different shapes. One of the most common shapes is the teardrop but there are many different variations and styles.
