Skateboards FAQs
What kind of skate equipment is the best?
The best equipment is the stuff that’s free, but if you can’t get anything for free the best skateboarding equipment is made in America, especially California. For a high quality board, wheels, trucks and hardware you can trust almost any professional skateboard manufacturer in the US. Other places just don’t skate enough to understand how to produce the best equipment for skating. Of course this may not be true every where, a skateboard made in California is probably a safe bet.
Should I get big wheels or little ones?
In the nineties wheel sizes went well below 40mm for no apparent reason. I guess little wheels had street cred because it made it look like the board was ridden more and had worn down wheels. Basically the larger the wheel the faster it will go, but it will also be more difficult to get up to those faster speeds. A tiny wheel can change direction very quickly, accelerate quickly, slide easily, but also slows down quickly and causes a lot of road vibration. They are almost useless on real roads. Larger wheels are heavier and may weigh down the board so the best sized wheels are right in the middle. Anywhere from 50-70mm is very useful for short boards while a longboard wheel can easily be larger than 80mm and still be easily controlled.
Should I wear pads?
Not if you want to look cool, but really pads may not help much unless you are a vert rider at the park everyday. They are great for half pipes, bowls and other vert skating but not for regular skating as they can impair mobility and invite insults. The most common injuries are wrist, which is almost impossible to prevent and tail bone injuries which are likewise difficult to protect from.
Wearing a helmet is another story of course, just wear it.
Where is the best place to skate?
Anywhere that you won’t get busted although those are often the best places to skate. Try hitting them at night to avoid hurting any innocent bystanders. This is also a good time for other illegal activities so be sure to come prepared with spray cans and black hoodies. Avoid parks on Saturdays, the groms take them over so if you are a grom, go to the skate park on Saturdays.
What can a skater do during the winter?
Practice in the garage if necessary, or take the trucks and wheels off and practice inside on carpet jumping and flipping the board. Other indoor training equipment has balancing games that are very similar to skateboarding. The best thing to do would be to go snowboarding if that is possible. There are also indoor skate parks in many cities and skateboarding video games can always be played.
